By 24 weeks postpartum, however, echocardiographic studies demonstrated mild left ventricular hypertrophy that correlated with a slight diminution in left ventricular contractility as compared with agematched nongravid control. Because the echocardiographic parameters in the control subjects were similar to that in previously published reports, it is likely that this small diminution in myocardial function 6 months after delivery is a real observation. This is an interesting finding, because patients with peripartum cardiomyopathy usually develop their disease within 5-6 months of delivery (Lee& Cotton, 1989).
