Verbal reasoning In so far as function is concerned, verbal reasoning facilitates interaction between persons, and it is used as a guide to action. g. ‘if this then that’, ‘either this or that’) in order to infer the relations between the events or situations mentioned in a sequence of sentences (Braine 1990; Demetriou 1998b). At the second level of organization, operations and processes in this domain are primarily directed to the truth and validity relations between verbal statements so that the person may judge the accuracy of the information received, decipher deception, etc.

This field has been very successful in uncovering a number of stable dimensions of ability and cognitive functioning that can be used to measure and compare individuals. Specifically, in this tradition, there is growing agreement that intelligence is a three-level hierarchical system. This hierarchy involves general intelligence, or g, a set of broad abilities, such as spatial, verbal, and mathematical reasoning, and a variety of narrow abilities within g or within each of the broad abilities mentioned above (Carroll 1993; Gustafsson and Undheim 1996; Jensen 1998).

That is, the phonological loop is affected by interference from verbal but not visuo-spatial information; the visuo-spatial sketchpad is affected by visuo-spatial but not verbal information (Shah and Miyake 1996). However, these systems are interrelated in the episodic buffer and information from one can be translated into the code of the other through rehearsal guided by DEF. Other specialized buffers associated with other senses, such as smell and touch, may also be present. Directive-executive control processes These processes involve five basic components: (i) a feedforward or directive function which sets the mind’s current goals; (ii) a planning function that proactively constructs a road map of the steps to be made in the pursuit of the goal; (iii) a comparator or regulatory function which regularly effects comparisons between the present state of the system and the goal; (iv) a negative feedback control function which registers discrepancies between the present state and the goal and suggests corrective actions; and (v) an evaluation function which enables the system to evaluate each step’s processing demands vis-`avis the available structural possibilities and necessary skills and strategies of the system so as to make decisions about the value of continuing or terminating the endeavour and evaluate the final outcome achieved.
