These are evidence of a show that revels in the fakeness of its aesthetics. One such scene portrays Spartacus’ attack on a large wagon transporting Crassus’ supplies (“Blood Brothers”). It opens with an establishing shot of the Sicilian skyline, colored an unnatural reddishbrown; the mise-en-scène is stark and austere—there is scant vegetation and only one leafless tree pays testament to the possibility of life. In the center of the frame, roughly a dozen Roman soldiers are escorting a wagon, moving towards the camera.
